Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality

AR

Augmented Reality (AR) is a very popular technology nowadays. It’s been getting more popular with the developing technology. As for the definition of AR, it brings some visual elements into our real world on the screen in simple terms. So that means, you can open your camera in your room and see a full-size gorilla right next to you. Thanks to Augmented Reality technology, it is now possible to experience these kinds of things. For instance, if you want to see a color or style change on your hair fits you or not, then you can use AR supported applications to see!

This technology is incredible for education too. Sometimes providing some materials is very difficult due to various reasons. For instance, a teacher might teach the class dinosaurs. Since it is impossible to bring a dinosaur in the classroom, an app supports AR technology can be used to demonstrate the dinosaur. You may ask, but how a language teacher can use this for their class? Besides the grammar, it can be used for vocabulary learning. As an example, hypothetically teacher couldn’t bring housewares to classroom, what can they do? They can use AR technology to show the students and teach the name of the housewares. It can be used for animals too. Since it is impossible just as the dinosaur example.

There is a popular app called Snapchat that uses AR technology. There are different kinds of filters on the app. You can take pictures with the app and with AR technology, in your pictures there are some visuals that do not exist normally. And you can play games, too! Here is an example;


VR

VR (Virtual Reality) is computer-based simulation that can be interacted by someone with technological devices such as VR headset or VR joystick. It is also a developing technology such as AR (Augmented Reality). So, with these technologies it is possible to teach and learn. There are some apps that support the VR technology. Nowadays, it is possible to find the headsets for VR and have applications on our mobile phones and tablets.

In language learning, VR can be used for in or outside classroom activities. So in this way, students can continue their education outside of the school with proper environment. There is an app called VR Learn English in 3D. There is only one thing needed to use the app; the headset. After providing it, you are allowed to use it. You need to walk around, move your head side to side, in reality, to see he room and discover the objects. You can see the name of the objects and hear the pronunciation. In this way, learning language becomes easier. Besides the language learning, this technology is very beneficial for other educations such as medicine. The med students can use this technology for operation practice.

    I’m here with something new today! I want to introduce you a virtual reality game Second Life! But first, I should start with explaining what virtual world is. The definition in *Techopedia says “A virtual world is a computer-based online community environment that is designed and shared by individuals so that they can interact in a custom-built, simulated world.” So, as you can see, Second Life is also a virtual world! How does it work?     Firstly, you need to download the app. After the set-up process, you can go into the virtual world of Second Life. First thing you need to do is registering the app. Then, there is a section that you create and design your own avatar! You can create your avatar as a vampire, monster, etc. So, there are many options! After choosing your avatar, you can customize your appearance.
